Next Friday is going to be funky little fish Friday at home. An article Wednesday in Columbus Dispatch article titled “Funky little fish” quoted me about anchovies.

“I like them on Caesar salad, pizza or just crackers,”

That’s it. The Columbus Dispatch article also said “For her, the saltiness is the draw.” I am the “her” in that sentence. That’s all. That’s my contribution to the subject of anchovies… I like them.
It all started back on Robin Davis, the Columbus Dispatch Food Editor Robin Davis asked on Twitter who liked anchovies.

I responded.

Anchovies divide the world

According to the Columbus Dispatch article John McCauley of Columbus voted “nay” for anchovies. We are now following one another on Twitter… we both feel passionately about funky little fish.

Newspaper reader?

This world is divided into people who read the Columbus Dispatch and those who do not. Well not the world, Columbus. A friend emailed me Wednesday morning that the Columbus Dispatch had the shocking revelation that I like anchovies. She probably never realized I say “yay” to anchovies.

A friend hangs out with Columbus Dispatch readers. Running into friends … male friends Wednesday afternoon, he heard I like anchovies. He knew that! Just last Friday eating a Caesar salad, at Red Lobster I brought up wanting to find a REAL Caesar salad with anchovies. If anyone can recommend an authentic Caesar salad in Columbus… thanks. Maybe the guy in the March 2013 Columbus Dispatch article who said “nay” to funky little fish can say where he’s had Caesar salad in central Ohio and had to say “hold the chovies.”

In a May 2012 article in the Columbus Dispatch about anchovies there was at least one recipe. The pizza recipe with anchovy oil uses two anchovy filets. A little anchovy goes a long way. I have not had anchovies on a Caesar salad in forever… I have not had anchovies on pizza in years. I know Iacono’s which was my favorite pizza in Columbus serves pizza with anchovies.

Recently on ColumbusBestBlog.com I believed I was a “pescatarian” because I eat fish … Friday Fish Fry in Columbus a Pescatarian Poll.

The picture at the top is a photo in The Columbus Dispatch… the picture is of Pasta Puttanesca is a link to the image on my food “Board” on Pinterest. Click on the photo of the Pasta Puttanesca once and you will be on my “Edible” board. Click on the photo on the board and you will be on the Columbus Dispatch site on the recipe that accompanies the March 6, 2013 Columbus Dispatch article titled , ‘Funky little fish.’

I never thought I’d see the day that blog posts would have photos from mainstream media. How does that work? The Columbus Dispatch shared their photo of the pasta and recipe via Pinterest and I re-pinned it. I used the Pinterest tool on the Columbus Dispatch site to share the photo. The image the newspaper allowed to be shared on Pinterest is then re-shared via an embed from Pinterest. Newspapers using Pinterest… tweeting it’s all so 2011, 2012… 2013. What is somewhat confusing is that by sharing the image on a site with a tool to add images to Pinterest, will I be hijacking their image? Please re-share directly from the Dispatch so it links to the recipe, not my post. Thanks. That way the traffic and the eyes looking for the recipe pictured all go back to the Columbus Dispatch.

Just asking do you subscribe to Columbus Newspapers Online now that are behind a pay wall? Or do you get your Columbus news online elsewhere? A poll. The poll is just about the Columbus Dispatch subscription options.

I have access to the home sale info from the Columbus Board of REALTORS, I am a member. I do like to look at how the real estate information provided by the Columbus Board of REALTORS is translated by the Columbus Dispatch and Columbus Business First. Also information the newspapers (or their digital versions) provide from OAR (the Ohio Association of REALTORS ® and National real estate information released by NAR. I like to see what the local press takes from the information and how they slant the information for their readers. Or unslant the real estate information .

“Home sales continue hot streak in Columbus, across Ohio”

is a recent headline on the bizjournals Columbus Business First article by Evan Weese, Web coordinator

Do you subscribe?

“Rising home values benefit all homeowners in Central Ohio, but especially those who have been in a negative equity position,” Columbus Board of Realtors …”

The BEST schools in Columbus

Information about the Ohio Department of Education releasing preliminary report cards for central Ohio schools made me a frequent user of the Columbus Dispatch this month. The preliminary report card info released by the Ohio Department of Education on October 17, 2012. I read about the prelimary report cards for Ohio schools first on the bizjournals site. On the 18th I went to the Columbus Dispatch site. The Columbus Dispatch cut me off on October 18, 2012. I went over the limit of 10 free premium articles this month. I am thinking of subscribing to the Columbus Dispatch. I might subscribe to the Columbus Dispatch at least for this month. There is so much info about the recent, preliminary school report cards on the Columbus Dispatch site. I love the Columbus Dispatch “Online Database.” Really love it.

I downloaded the data from the Ohio Department of Education on the spreadsheet. A spreadsheet with info for every school in the state of Ohio is kind of unwieldy.

Columbus Dispatch subscription

I don’t understand the $2 -$5 in this:

“Thanks for being a frequent visitor to dispatch.com! You’ve now viewed your monthly quota of 10 free premium articles. Want to read more? Become a Digital D Subscriber and enjoy unlimited access to award-winning content that can’t be found anywhere else. Simply upgrade your existing print subscription for $2-5 per month, or become a new Digital D subscriber.”

Are existing home delivery subscribers paying various amounts? Or is the $5 difference in the Saturday – Sunday delivery and Digital D. Is there still a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday home delivery of the Columbus Dispatch. It looks like only a $1 difference between the home delivery and Digital D…

Decisions, decisions… should I subscribe

I looked at individual schools on the preliminary report card data. There is a lot of info to scroll though, all schools in Ohio on that huge spread sheet. The data on the Columbus Dispatch is so convenient. Did I mention I love the Columbus Dispatch “Online Database” of the preliminary report cards?

It was a mere 100 degrees officially on July 6, 2012 at Port Columbus. A record breaker…

This thermometer in Far North Columbus (between Worthington and Polaris) read 108 degrees and a little bit later when when this photo was shot 105 degrees. I think the angle of the sun, the reflection off window and a concrete patio make this thermometer read high in the late afternoon.

Yesterday’s Columbus Dispatch article titled “Hitting 100 Degrees Rare in Columbus” tells about the hot years. 1988 and 1936.

Today’s forecast: 102 degrees.

2012 temperatures we will be talking about them for years.

The part of the front yard on the other side of the sidewalk. That part of the front yard, owned by the city? Or the city has control of it? Or the city has control of the tree on the patch of grass between the street and the sidewalk anyway.

More ash trees are being removed from Columbus streets due to the Emerald Ash Borer, a bug. The Columbus Dispatch article by Lauren Hepler of the Columbus Dispatch says:

“In communities, parks and recreation departments cut down ash trees on public rights of way, including tree lawns, but trees on private property are left for the landowner.”

We called “tree lawns” something else in the town I grew up in and cities I have lived in since. I was a small child when streets in southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois devastated by Dutch Elm Disease…. I think Dutch Elm Disease may have been what made me get in touch with my “inner Druid.” I remember the huge trees on my paternal grandparent’s farm being removed. I remember all the streets near my maternal grandparent’s north-side Chicago house becoming bare. The huge shade trees which were all American Elms had to be removed. Dutch Elm Disease was a fungus? It did not come from Holland… identification of what was wrong that these huge trees were dying came from someone who was Dutch.

I bet there are photos of Clintonville, Victorian Village, Worthington with elm shaded streets before the 1960s. I think Dutch Elm Disease was a national thing.

I think we called the “tree lawn”… “the terrace” in the small south-eastern Wisconsin city I grew up in. Or perhaps that is just what my parents called it. Maybe that came from where they grew up. My parents both loved trees. Our little cape – cod in a late 1950s neighborhood did not have trees. Our neighborhood was a former farm field. A builder planted some little boxes in a former farm field, the two houses on either side of us had some scrubby trees. That and some barbed wire we found at the back of our lots convinced us we were at the edge of a farm field that became suburbia on the edge of the farm fields that met “the city.”

I can tell maples, oaks… I know a hawthorn when I see one. I mostly learned what trees are what trees by their leaves, well except birch trees and crab apples…. From walks in Highbanks Metro Park I can identify Black Cherry trees and others by their bark.

I probably would not know an elm if it bit me.
