To the Swiftest go the Spoils

by Maureen McCabe on October 14, 2007

raceI wrote here about Columbus being named a stable market on October 3…  Columbus is the third most stable housing market    in the US according to  That’s not bad.

On our internal website my company Real Living HER announced the facts to us around October 10….

“Columbus Ranked Third out of the 10 Most Stable Markets
Forbes Magazine teamed up with Moody’s to rank the country’s 10 most stable markets – and Columbus is No. 3!

Pittsburgh, Columbus and Dallas follow Seattle in the rankings. Predictions are based on the state of the local economies, new construction contracts, foreclosure rates, local credit markets, sales rates, affordability and inventory.

There is even more good news in the article. Based on Moody’s calculations, next year Columbus should boast the eight-fastest rate of the 40 markets examined! “

Fastest… I remember that line in the article on but I read it now and wonder fastest, as in shortest days on market (days on market or DOM.)?  What does “next year Columbus should boast the eight-fastest rate of the 40 markets examined! ” mean?

The line from the slide show on says:

“Based on Moody’s calculations, next year Columbus should boast the eighth-fastest sales rate of the 40 markets examined.”

Columbus has never been that swift. I meant  swift as in fast, here.  Usually when I say swift I usually mean “cool” not fast.   Columbus 19th Best US City for Single People    according to an earlier study.  When it came to coolness though Columbus was 40th out of the 40 markets, according to

I kind of wonder if we will still poke along the same (long days on market) as usual just that it is all relative to national and the other 32 markets.

I tried finding where the phrase ” To the Swiftest go the Spoils” came from… no luck but I found a quote of Jonathan Swift….

 ”You can’t make a Silk Purse out of a Sow’s Ear.”  Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745)”

Not that Columbus is or ever was  a “Sow’s Ear…”  I just love that saying.  I also like the sayings “when pigs fly” and  ”pig in a poke”… that is what home inspection is all about, not buying a “pig in a poke.”  Come to think of it many of my favorite sayings are about pigs.

Swift piggies… here’s a pig race… It has nothing to do with Ohio…I see a palm tree, must be California.   A Pig race featuring celebs  like Kevin Bacon, Brad Pig, Britney Spareribs.

Columbus Housing Market stable and swift in 2008… “you can’t beat that with a stick.”
