NAR make a move on Move poll

by Maureen McCabe on October 6, 2009

I don’t usually talk to the real estate industry here.  I can’t rely on the flash version of this poll on my ActiveRain blog where I usually do (talk to my peers in the real estate industry.)  I am reposting it here.

From my ActiveRain (real estate network) blog:

In ‘NAR it’s time to make a move on Move’ Jonathan Washburn shared history Realtor.com history:

History of REALTOR.com (Excerpted from Realtor.org website)

“In November 1996, the Board of Directors of the National Association of REALTORS® approved an agreement between the REALTORS® Information Network (RIN)—NAR’s wholly-owned subsidiary–and RealSelect, Inc. to take over the operations of NAR’s official Internet site, REALTOR.com. At the time, many business models were considered to finance the development of REALTOR.com. NAR’s Leadership Team decided against using dues dollars or asking for a special assessment of the membership to fund REALTOR.com. While Homestore and its investors have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to build and operate REALTOR.com, no NAR funds or NAR member dues dollars have ever been used for the creation or operation of the site.”

Jonathan… said it was time for NAR to move on Move.com last August. August 2008.

It’s a poll!

Sorting out the “who is who?” is tough for some of us.

NAR is the National Association of REALTORS®

Realtor.com is a website

Move.com (formerly Home Store) operates the Realtor.com site.

Realtor.org (NAR) says of the future for REALTOR.com and NAR (our association):

“The two organizations have continued their relationship essentially unchanged because they both benefit.”

Again that is from 2006… ARE we the members benefiting today?

Jonathan wrote:

“Realtor.com should be controlled and operated by the National Association of Realtors. It is our namesake, and the Internet is too important to Realtors to just outsource.”

Maybe you could dig up some of the old debates on RT. This argument has been going on for 10 or 11 years and will probably continue until the internet is replaced by circuit boards implanted in our brains
