I'm not surprised to see home inspectors giving away free inspections. We all know that things are slow. The unfortunate part is the message that this sends to both consumers and Realtors about our industry and the value of what we do. This gives the impression that home inspectors provide the same commodity to be valued at the cheapest price like buying insurance or a car.

Contrast this with the image of an inspector as the provider of a professional consluting service. A buyer seeks out a high quality professional to give them the information that they need to make an informed buying decision about the single most important investment of their lives. If you needed open heart surgery would you go to a doctor based on a free coupon. If you were falsely accused of a crime would you choose an attorney based on discounts or level of skill and expertise?

We all need business but is this truly the type of marketing that communicates the value of the service we provide. I know Realtors love to pass savings on to their clients. I suppose you get what you pay for.
