Who should replace racist Ohioan in DC?

by Maureen McCabe on August 16, 2009

It’s just a statue…

It’s history…

Actually I don’t know that he was a racist..  I never heard of William Allen before.  First I read was an Associated Press article in the Columbus Dispatch Sunday morning. No link, no quote…  the early Ohio lawmaker supported slavery prior to the Civl War.  He was not a fan of Abraham Lincoln.

Here’s an article about replacing the statue from earlier this year.  From Cleveland.com :

“Whatever happened to? …’: Replacing Ohio’s statue of William Allen in the U.S. Capitol?” “Whatever happened to the effort to replace Ohio’s statue of William Allen in the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall with someone else?” by Sabrina Eaton

Looks like it is moving forward… since that was posted by Plain Dealer staff  on February 16, 2009 03:45AM  a selection committee visited Milan Ohio, birthplace of Thomas Edison, they’ll be visiting Dayton to look into the Wright Brothers….

Other’s mentioned in the Columbus Dispatch article include Dean Martin, Annie Oakley, Jesse Owens, Bob Hope, Paul Brown…

Anyone else you can think of?

Here’s a poll:

What? No Jim Tressel option?

I was racking my brain for who was Columbus favorite son… and of course right now he is very well liked and there'd be Youngstown support too. Tressel could be written in.

Wait.. I think they have to be dead. I don't think it would be worth it… maybe someday…

Ok, Woody Hayes then!

Seriously though I voted for Edison although the Wright Bros would be a good choice.

Dean Martin? Bob Hope? You know Clark Gable was from eastern Ohio.

I did not know Clark Gable was from eastern Ohio. Sports and movies / entertainment figures are nice but I don't personally think they belong among the statues in the hall. There are wax museums, hall of fames for them.

Edison was born in Ohio and lived here until he was 7? I voted for the Wright Bros. maybe because I lived in Dayton. I think that is the correct answer but I wondered if they would be disqualified because there are two of them. Some people may think Dean Martin is the right answer, especially if they are from Steubenville or real big Dean Martin fans.

The Woody Hayes thing could almost come true….
