That’s the sound of the sump pump

by Maureen McCabe on July 25, 2011

“That’s the sound of the sump pump working on the rain….”

Lyrics to the song in my head now.  The song is to the tune of Sam Cooke’s “Chain Gang.”

I don’t know all the lyrics.  In fact there is not a word for “Gang” in the song in my head but that is the sound when the sump pump flushes?  Discharges….  The first time I had a sump pump explained to me by a home inspector… or the first time I remember having a sump pump explained to me I think he used an analogy of a toilet flushing.

It rained Friday night.  It rained Saturday night.  It rain Sunday night and into this morning…  I am losing track of the hot days and rainy nights in central Ohio.  I heard some areas in central Ohio had four inches of rain. Over a period of how many days?  During one storm?  I have heard that some people lost power.  The sump pump can’t work without  power.   The sound will stop if the sump pump stops working.

I woke up during the night the last few nights hearing a noise…  What’s that sound?  “That’s the sound of the sump pump working on the rain….”

I could only wish to hear the sound of a sump pump. We never get any rain here in New Mexico.

We are rainier than Seattle? I read that somewhere a few years back. Or maybe it was cloudier? Hardly something to boast about.

Texas is begging for rain from tropical storm Don now…
