Ohio Schools – Consolidations

by Maureen McCabe on February 22, 2010

Ohio Public School consolidations were suggested by the Brookings Institute today. What do you think? A poll:

The tweet from WOSU News:

“A Recommendation that Ohio Cut by One Third its Number of School Districts Stirs Controversy” links to A Recommendation that Ohio Cut by One Third its Number of School Districts Stirs Controversy on WOSU

Would consolidation even affect* Central Ohio? Aren’t most Central Ohio school districts on the huge side? Smaller school districts thinking aloud Delaware County – Big Walnut? Buckeye Valley? In Franklin County – Grandview Heights? Hamilton Local? (outside of my area of expertise but I knew a couple of men who taught there…) Plain Local?

Would the consolidations of Ohio schools be in less populated counties? The WOSU podcast talks about county wide school districts…

I used *”a-f-f-e-c-t” rather than “e-f-f-e-c-t” and lets hope I am using the correct word. Personally I would have gone with “e-f-f-e-c-t” and been wrong if NOT for Twitter. I tweeted for grammar help. Thanks to grammar help from @DavidLambert, @Dieverdog, @OhBoyToy, @SayB , @Jackie_Mantey, @SelimaCat and @TNSProject (all but one in Central Ohio I believe… wonder if they graduated from Ohio schools??? ) of course I framed my question around Columbus… so maybe that’s why mostly Columbus people answered. Or maybe R-E-A-L-T-O-R-S-® all across the country… many of my “followers” on Twitter are real estate agents. We hang out in packs… maybe many real estate agents are as confused as me about affect vs. effect.

Thank you Columbus people with the good grasp of grammar! I think it was five votes for an a… spelling it “a-f-f-e-c-t” and two votes for an e. @OhBoyToy gave me a link in his tweet, that helped. He thought he would use an e too but provided the Grammar Girl Link Affect vs. Effect Here now so I can seek the answer privately the next time this stumps me. Somehow my years of schooling in Wisconsin (kindergarten through a bachelors degree) never gave me a firm understanding of the whole affect vs. effect thing. Please excuse my grammar tangent.

Do you think Ohio should consolidate schools? Do you think Ohio will consolidate schools.

Missed the link in @DavidLambert ‘s link until I’d published. I just took his word for it, that it should be affect. @DavidLambert ‘s link is good too… Another grammar link for affect vs. effect
