Columbus Cheap to Own a Car

by Maureen McCabe on February 15, 2011

Columbus is on a list of places that Yahoo says are “Cheapest Cities  to Own a Car”

Personally I like the word inexpensive better than CHEAP, but I am certainly not finding fault in the article written by Colleen Kane.   The Yahoo article which lists 7 cities is from a CNBC .com article that lists 11 cities, where it is relatively affordable to own a car.

The Yahoo article says of Columbus:

“Contributing factors: Columbus has a lot going for it in terms of owning a car: cheap insurance ($1,117 annually), and because of the relatively low number of hours spent in congestion annually, 17, drivers lose less in wages and waste less fuel while in congestion ($294 and $47, respectively).”

Also on the list, #1 Cleveland, #2 Milwaukee area… #3 Cinci area,  #4 Columbus

When we moved to Columbus from Dayton our insurance jumped.  I remember that distinctly.   I guess it is relative.   The Yahoo article by is talking cities of a certain size…it lumps the town I grew up in with Milwaukee.  Cleveland the “cheapest City to Own a Car?  Or the first city on the list is Cleveland, Mentor, Elyria.   Dayton is a smaller city than Columbus.  I had to look to see if Cincinnati included Dayton,  it says “Cincinnati – Middletown, Ohio.”    Dayton is “up the road a piece.”

Low congestion! The loss of  wages is an interesting way of looking at it.

The cost of owning a car in Columbus according to the Yahoo article? $3,401.  Click through to the Yahoo.com article if you want to see photos of High Street in the Short North… and the rest of the cities on the list.

Cheap, cheap, cheap….

Columbus really is a great place to live and very easy to drive around. When I lived in Cincinatti, I used to come to Columbus often for focus groups and trade shows – very easy to drive around – way better than NYC.

I guess I did not realize you’d lived in Cinci!

Getting used to Disqus again. I think I like it.
