unassuming Columbus

“in unassuming Columbus, Ohio”

jenis-tweet

I feel like I failed in August to let out-of-towners know about  something special in Columus, Jeni’s Ice Cream.  At a real estate event when someone visiting Columbus mentioned trying Graeter’s while in Cincinnati another Columbus real estate blogger* and I looked at one another and said “Jeni’s” but at least I failed to run up after the round table and say  again more directly “Jeni’s.” I was home on my phone reading emails and tweets and all kinds of stuff when the realization set in.

Their last night in Columbus and they could  miss Jeni’s…  People from Illinois, California, North Carolina, West Virginia and Philadelphia (the far side of PA ) were out eating dinner and they needed to know about Jeni’s.  The closest open Jeni’s to Hyatt Capital Square… Grandview or the Short North?  I was on Google Maps…

The Atlantic on an American Food Tour did not miss Jeni’s Ice Cream even if  Columbus was not on their agenda.  “An ice cream surprise in Columbus.” The Atlantic refer to Columbus as “unassuming Columbus, Ohio.”

The Atlantic article starts off about Jeni’s Backyard Mint flavor but mentions other flavors like:

  • Bourbon Buttered Pecan made with Makers Mark
  • Goat Cheese with Roasted Red Cherries
  • Thai Chili

Back to August 18, 2009 with vistor’s in the city for REBarCamp Ohio.   I hoped the other person* who said “Jeni’s” at the mention of Graeter’s remembered to say to one of them… “have you heard about  Jeni’s?”  and tantalized them with flavors like:

  • Sweet Corn and Black Raspberry
  • Carrot Cake

I tweeted #REBCOHIO visitors 1 word B4 you leave town Jeni’s.

A response came back via Twitter…

They were at Graeter’s

Yes Graeter’s is good and Jeni’s is great and they were in our backyard and where else are they gonna find:

  • Red Beets with Lemon & Poppy Seeds
  • Watermelon Lemonade Sorbet
  • Celery ice cream

*Not sharing the name… but sharing the blame???  We shoulda made sure they got to Jeni’s before they left Columbus.

Jeni's is hands down the best ice cream in town. I'll share the blame. I was there. This never should have happened.
If only the out of town real estate Glitterati could have discovered what local gourmet ice cream is meant to be.
Maybe this post will serve to warn others in Columbus for conventions, conferences and business meetings not to cavort at lesser ice cream establishments but, rather, to make a bee line to Jeni's and get a taste of one of Columubs' special gems.

They'll be looking long and hard to find red beet, Thai chili or sweet corn ice cream anywhere in the US… It shouldn't have happened to such nice people.
