Johnny Marzetti is Columbus

by Maureen McCabe on December 9, 2010

Johnny Marzetti came from Columbus.  Johnny Marzetti is in Wikipedia.

On Facebook Michael Maughan, a friend and former client who lived in Columbus for a number of  years and now lives in Cleveland wrote:

“The first corollary to the first rule of Johnny Marzetti (Columbus style) is that you must never make it the same way twice. Did you make it on the stove today? Bake it next week.”

Perhaps it grabbed my attention first because I thought he meant after a week sitting on the stove to try baking your Johnny Marzetti.  That was not what he was saying.    Michael’s  Facebook conversation made me think about Johnny Marzetti.

Johnny Marzetti in Wikipedia and e-How and says:

“The dish originated in Columbus, Ohio, at the Marzetti restaurant, and spread to other parts of the United States as variations of the recipe were published in magazines and cookbooks during the mid-20th century. The dish is still served in Ohio, especially at social gatherings and in school lunchrooms.”

The Wikipedia article goes on to tell about another part of the world where  Johnny Marzetti is popular.  The Panama Canal Zone.   People in the Panama Canal Zone  dropped the r though from Marzetti and are surprised it comes from Columbus Ohio?

I think I only had Johnny Marzetti once.  Or at least only one time when it was called Johnny Marzetti.  I don’t think I had ever heard of Johnny Marzetti when I lived in Akron or Dayton.  I don’t think I had Johnny Marzetti for the first five years I lived in Columbus.

Ohio History about  Johnny Marzetti The story of Italian immigrant Teresa Marzetti and the  Marzetti Restaurant on Broad St. in Columbus.
