Columbus is number 7 in the US for bedbugs, according to a list from Terminix.

Flytown now there’s a neighborhood where bedbugs probably bit back in the day. Flytown is no more. Flytown was where 670 is today? It was an immigrant area long ago. I always thought of Flytown as the Irish neighborhood in Columbus. It was. It was also home to other ethnic groups when they emigrated to the US.

I always remember a scene in the movie ‘Angela’s Ashes’ about bedbugs. Or maybe I remember bedbugs from the book, ‘Angela’s Ashes.’ I read the book before I saw the movie. I believe the McCourt family met up with bedbugs more than once. I believe they ran into bedbugs in the US, in New York City and in Ireland.

Other than hearing “Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite” as a kid and at some point getting an explanation that there was no such thing as bedbugs anymore…not to worry… I have never been exposed to bedbugs, personally.

The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force’s list… is a .pdf . It is on resources on their site. I could just link the map here but I am not going to… I am going to link to their resources page. The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force’s page is where to go to find out about EVERYTHING to do with bedbugs in Central Ohio. Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force – Resources click on map.

ZIP code, then numbers? The map does not have a legend. I thought it was a heat map and the colors on the map meant something. I now believe the numbers are the number of bedbug treatments?

43235 9

43085 12

43235 is the West Worthington ZIP code. 43085 is the Worthington ZIP code. Compare that to ZIP codes with hundreds after the ZIP code. How is your ZIP code. I believe the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force map only shows Franklin County. I see a Westerville ZIP code, I do not see the second Westerville ZIP code. Perhaps it is just the Franklin County Bed Bug Task Force. The New Albany ZIP code is on the map. Other Central Ohio ZIP codes in Southern Delaware County are not on the map. 43240 a Columbus ZIP code in Delaware County did not make the map. 43240 is the Polaris area.

Looking at the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force’s map does tell you a story in my opinion. The less dense a population would be the less chance of an encounter with bed bugs, but they are everywhere.

Maybe it is the real estate agent in me but looking at the map… looking at the numbers… knowing the ZIP codes a bit. Knowing the neighborhoods. Knowing where there are multifamily homes, knowing where there are condominiums. I think a single family home is one of the best defenses against a personal encounter with a bedbug.

Ohio will be represented by Edison … in Washington D.C. A statue of Thomas Edison, will be representing Ohio in a couple of years.

Did you vote? Ohioans could vote for who to represent Ohio in a hall of statues. Each state has two representatives. Ohio native Thomas Edison will join President James Garfield in Washington D.C. A Civil War era Governor of Ohio who has been in the hall of statues for many years will return to Ohio. The statue of the long forgotten Governor who supported slavery… or perhaps it was just that he did not like Abraham Lincoln. The Governor Allen statue is coming home from the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.

Did you vote? For Edison? My vote was for the Wright Brothers. Orville and Wilbur Wright are from Dayton Ohio. Thomas Edison was born in Milan Ohio. I lived in Dayton for a few years. I never lived in Milan Ohio… I remember signs for Edison’s birthplace, when I lived in Akron and would drive across the north part of Ohio

An article titled Wright Brothers shot down Edison statue slated for D.C. was in the Columbus Dispatch on Friday. The Columbus Dispatch article with the sad news and clever headline was written by Alan Johnson. The Columbus Dispatch says:

“After deciding to depose Allen, state officials opted to open the selection of a replacement to a public vote. More than 48,000 people voted on 10 candidates. From that field, Edison emerged with 14,833 votes (30.4 percent), compared with 13,815 votes (28.2 percent) for the Wright Brothers.”

I use Thomas Edison’s invention a lot. Speaking of the light bulb… Thomas Edison invented many things didn’t he? Thomas Edison makes me think of the light bulb. I seldom use the Wright Brothers invention and when I do it really is no fun at all. Check in. Wait. Take off shoes. Wait. Lose shampoo to TSA. Wait. Board. Stow bag in the overhead compartment. Wait. Taxi around the runaways. Wait. Cleared for take off….

There is still something seared in my brain of photos of the Wright Brothers in Huffman Field… on the east side of Dayton. Trying to get their flying machine off the ground.

A site called Touring Ohio says of the Wright Brothers and Huffman Field:

“Huffman Field at the time of the Wright brothers, was a 100-acre farm meadow used for livestock owned by Torrence Huffman. Huffman gave the Wrights access to the field, but had little faith in their flying contraption. “They’re fools,” Torrence told a local farmer. Back in Dayton, the Wrights turned over their bicycle shop to Charlie Taylor to run while they concentrated all their efforts at developing their flying machine. “

Congratulations Edison for the win. Congratulations to Milan Ohio for sending Edison to Washington D.C. to represent us. Come on home Governor Allen, we’ll leave the light on for you…

Bug killer Terminix supplied the list based on use of pesticides. Columbus is number seven according to the list. Four Ohio cities made the list, Cincinnati is number four, Columbus is number seven, Dayton is number eight and Cleveland is fourteenth.

Number one? New York City, followed by Philadelphia and Detroit.

According to a popular Columbus blog, Columbus is number one.
