Telling stories about Gahanna

by Maureen McCabe on March 30, 2011

Telling stories about Gahanna.  Ghost stories.

There is a new comment on a Halloween 2010 post about ghost stories in Central Ohio.  Jeff wrote there:

“The Gahanna gym story has been debunked many times, but they won’t pull it down.

1.) There is no “Gahanna-Jefferson High School.”  That is the name of the school district.  The name of the school is “Lincoln High School” sometimes refered to as “Gahanna Lincoln.”  If they are talking about “Gahanna High School,” that was closed in 1927 when Lincoln opened merging Gahanna High School and Jefferson Township High School. (the Gahanna High Building sits on Short Street in Olde Gahanna but does not have a gym.)

2.)  Many Athletic Staff members and Basketball Coaches have turned off the lights many times in that gym and have never heard a thing.

3.) They story says “west” basket.  The baskets in that gym are on the north and south side. ”

” thanks Jeff”… that is my comment to his comment.

Yes I bet Jeff is right, the Gahanna ghost story is not gospel about  a  high school in Gahanna being haunted.  Does the site with the ghost story  identify the  high school as “Gahanna -Jefferson High School?  I read it as identifying high school in the Gahanna – Jefferson school district.    Thanks Jeff… yes, the Gahanna- Jefferson school is named Lincoln High School.   The Gahanna ghost story is certainly garbled.

Are the others?  No one will hurt my feelings if they debunk ghost stories about Westerville, etc.

I certainly did not know the history of  Gahanna High School, Jeff wrote:

I have a hard time keeping Worthington school history straight…

Thanks for the history.   I am going to have to pay attention to the old school…  I love old school buildings, old churches, old houses.

Is this a retraction my sharing the Gahanna ghost story or linking to the site that has other “ghost stories”  about Central Ohio communities?  Nope.  Just the rest of the story according to Jeff.  Thanks Jeff.

Do you think anyone really believes many of those ghost stories?  Personally I  am not a  big fan of  “urban legends” or even suburban or rural legends but in the summer around a camp fire, or in the fall there is nothing like a great ghost story.

Boo!

Freshman ’14 says “i have gym this semester and there has never been a girl with long black hair in a grey dress in the locker room. ”
NEVER?

You are hanging out in the gym locker room 24 hours a day so you know there is NEVER a ghost there. I assume that is the girl with long black hair in a grey dress” refers to a ghost…. I missed that the ghost is a girl, the black hair, grey dress… sounds kinda emo….

If you are hanging out in the gym locker room 24 hours a day, aren’t you going to flunk gym class? Not to mention the rest of the subjects this semester? Get out of the locker room kid or you’ll be signing stuff. “freshman 15″ which makes me think of college but that’s another story.

I go to GLHS and am also in P.E. this semester. I would like to point out that I have long black hair, and do wear the occasional grey dress :P.
No, but seriously…I’m graduating next year and have been in the locker room multiple times throughout my years. It’s freaking scary up there when you’re alone. I’ve known about the apparent ghost forever, and never thought twice about it until this semester.
One day I was late to class because I had to make up a test the period before, so everyone was already downstairs by the time I got up to the locker room. While I was changing by the first set of lockers, I heard something crash from back by the showers. It sounded like a locker slamming closed, but I was standing by the door and had checked to see if anyone was already in there. I hurriedly put my shirt on, ran downstairs, and refuse to ever go up there alone again.
Not only that, but my friend was also late to class after spending a while in the clinic. I was talking to this guy in the gym, when she ran in to the room with all of her school clothes still on. I asked her why she hadn’t changed, and if she was alright (because she looked OUT of it). She asked me if I could come up with her while she changed, because she had heard someone in the locker room while she was up there. I went with, and nothing happened, but she explained to me that there was a light on in Mrs. Kelley’s office when she had been up before, which was now off. Mrs. Kelley wasn’t there that day, and the office was locked.

I asked her later what had happened, and she said that she saw the light on and had heard someone crying. She went to knock on the door, and the light flickered, but no one answered. On the crack in the door, she could see that no one was in there, but she still heard crying. If you’ve ever been in the locker rooms, you know that they’re in a very isolated location of the school, and there’s no way that it could have been carrying from the hallway.

I guess there are probably ways of explaining or debunking the experiences that we’ve had, but I honestly believe there is SOMETHING up there. If not, then there should be, because it’s creepy as hell!
