Central Ohio: Top 10 High Schools

by Maureen McCabe on April 25, 2013

Top 10 High Schools

Olentangy LibertyA title like ‘Columbus Best High Schools’ is just made for ColumbusBestBlog.com, but perhaps rather than Columbus it is more correct to say “Central Ohio’s Best High Schools.”  The majority of the high schools ranked by US News (US News and World Reports) are in central Ohio suburban school districts, read all about the report in the US News report Best High Schools National Rankings.

No Ohio high schools made the top ten list nationally in the US News report published April 24, 2013.

Top Ten High Schools in Central Ohio

  1. Olentangy Liberty High School (4)
  2. Bexley High School (5)
  3. Olentangy High School (7)
  4. Orange High School (11)
  5. Dublin Coffman High School (12)
  6. Dublin Jerome High School (15)
  7. New Albany High School (18)
  8. Upper Arlington High School (25)
  9. Dublin Scioto High School (26)
  10. Hilliard Darby High School (31)

The numbers in parenthesis are their ranking in the state of Ohio according to US News.  Those are the top ten high schools in central Ohio, according to the ranking in US News. The highest ranked, Olentangy Liberty High School in the Olentangy Local School District came in 4th behind three Cincinnati area high schools.  Bexley is 5th in Ohio, Olentangy High School is 7th in the state. Orange High School, Olentangy’s newest high school is number 11 in Ohio according to the ranking. All three of the Dublin High Schools made it into the top ten (mine based on the US News) too.

Congratulations to Olentangy Liberty High School for topping the list in central Ohio in 2013.

Best Central Ohio High Schools

Grandview Heights, Thomas Worthington, Worthington Kilbourne, Columbus Alternative, Westerville North, Granville, Hilliard Davidson,
Pickerington North and Buckeye Valley are all in the top 100 in the state of Ohio too… in that order.  US News ranked Buckeye Valley High School a  school district in Delaware County  at number 100 of Ohio High Schools.

Columbus Best High School

Congratulations to Columbus Alternative High School at #54 on the list of Ohio high schools in the ranking by US News.  I believe that is the only high school in the Columbus City School District in the top 125 high schools in the state.  Columbus Alternative High School  is on McGuffey Road in north-east Columbus.

Ohio schools ratings

After the 125 ranked high schools the other schools in the state are rated (not ranked but subject to the same methodology see below) and listed in alphabetical order kind of (three lists…) I was looking for Westerville South High School and Westerville Central High School.  Are all the schools there?  I did not think so, I had a heck of a time finding the high school in Gahanna, but that’s just because  I forget Lincoln High School is the name of the only high school in the Gahanna Jefferson City School District .   I want the school to be named Gahanna High School because most of the other high schools are the suburbs or school districts name.

Methodology

The methodology US News used for the  Best High Schools did not change.  It is the same methodology as last year (2012.) An organization called ‘American Institutes for Research’ or AIR worked with US News to come up with these ratings/ rankings.  AIR is a behavioral and social science research organization.  US News explains the methodology in “How U.S. News Calculated the 2013 Best High Schools Rankings.” They used a three-step process to determine the Best High Schools ratings / rankings. Serving all students well is part of the way schools across the country are rated.

Columbus Business First has a slide show that shows the top 15 local high schools according to the US News report, Olentangy Liberty to Westerville North.

The full report in US News has a “Why High Schools Moved Up and Down in the Rankings”  and lots more to read.  You can search for a high school by name, you can click on Ohio and see the rankings / ratings for high schools across the state.
