Columbus Zoo BEST in the US

by Maureen McCabe on February 11, 2009

According to USA Travel Guide Columbus Zoo is the best zoo in the country. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium topped the USA Travel Guides   “Top Ten List ”

#1 – Columbus Zoo in Columbus, Ohio

“While any of the zoos mentioned above are worthy of they respect they have garnered, none have achieved the positive worldwide reputation of the Columbus Zoo, arguably America’s favorite. While the zoo has been open continuously since 1927, its reputation grew to such heights under direction of the amiable Jack Hanna, one the America’s most beloved animal experts. Under Hanna’s guidance, the quality of the Columbus Zoo was elevated considerably, making it what is considered today to be the aspiration of any traditional zoo. Along with over 7,000 animals, the Columbus Zoo has more recently expanded to include a water park, amusement park and golf resort.”

Congratulations to Jack Hanna and everyone with the Columbus Zoo for being recognized.

Got to agree. Although it’s been a few years since I’ve gone to the Columbus zoo and I’m sure it’s gotten even better, it was in a class by itself even then.

It should be at the top of every visitor’s to do list.

I grew up with the Milwaukee County Zoo which I believe is bigger than the Columbus Zoo… we also went to the two zoos in Chicago, Lincoln Park and Brookfield Zoo when I was a kid… I went back to the Lincoln Park once as an adult. I was a tad disappointed with the Columbus Zoo when I first went but KNOWING the zoo has helped me appreciate it. I think after seeing Jack Hanna on TV and hearing about the “Columbus Zoo” nationally I had unrealistic expectations. I now think it is the best zoo in the country, of course.

Confession …I DID not like the zoo as a kid but went to it quite a bit. It was hot and tiring and the animals stunk.

I was a member of the San Diego Zoo but have NEVER been there. I did go to the Wild Animal Park in San Diego which is part of the zoo, hence the membership.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is great! I’ve always thought it would be hard to top. Last year they added Zoombezi Bay, a really neat waterpark and also a few rides. You can spend more than one day there. Takes a whole day just to see the Zoo. My favorite exhibits are the gorillas and the bonobos, but we always try to see it all when we’re there. Wildlights has over 3,000,000 lights, and is a beautiful way to spend a winter evening. Have always taken my granddaughter to the Zoo, and now that she’s 12, she loves Zoombezi Bay, the log flume, and viewing the animals through her camera lense.

We can never see the zoo in a day…

Never made it to Zoombezi Bay last year but I want to this summer. I liked the old water park…. I can’t even think of the name. Wyandot Lake! I hope when we have a 6 year old visitor this summer when it is warm we will get an opportunity to do Zoombezi Bay. Thanks for the comment Debbie.
