Columbus Ohio 2020 – The Ghost of Columbus Future

by Maureen McCabe on December 30, 2009

Mr. Magoo as Scrooge with the Ghost of Christmas Future c. 1962Columbus Ohio 2020 -  this is NOT about Columbus Ohio 2010 this is about Columbus Ohio in the future…ten years down the road.  I am wondering though  “Are these the shadows of the things that Will be, or are they shadows of things that May be, only?” to steal a line from Dicken’s ‘ A Christmas Carol’

From the Downtown Columbus blog… about the future of Columbus -   In Search of a city about Columbus in 2020  quotes Michael Wilkos about Columbus in the future.    I did not know who Michael Wilkos is but I found him via Zoom Info.  Wilkos is with The Columbus Foundation.  He was speaking at the Columbus Metropolitan Club forum.

Looking into the future…How old is your Columbus Ohio neighborhood and what school district are you in?

Columbus Ohio 2020 - how old is your ‘hood

Wilkos is quoted:

“the older, pre-1955 areas of Columbus that constitute the Columbus City School District would become considerably more affluent because of inward migration by young professionals in search of urban order, transportation options, and proximity to jobs and services.”

Compare that to the bleak picture…of later City of Columbus neighborhoods… also a quote from Michael Wilkos:

“a bleak picture of many Columbus neighborhoods built after 1955.  Many of these neighborhoods lack much semblance of planning, charm or walkability.  It is these neighborhoods, according to Wilkos, where increasing concentrations of poverty will be found.”

Before we get too far away from Christmas and the Dicken’s classic tale,  ‘A Christmas Carol’  with the ghosts of Christmas Past, and Christmas Future.  Or I guess the Ghost of Christmas Future is also known as  “The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.”  So this may be  ‘The Ghost of Columbus Yet to Come’…rather than ‘The Ghost of Columbus Future.’   My apologies I learned Dicken’s “A Christmas Story’ from Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol which was first shown in 1962…  In the itty bitty  image above is Scrooge (as played by Mr. Magoo in the 1962 cartoon)  is clutching the robe of the Ghost of Christmas Future and asking:   “Is this the future…” or what May be, only?

The line from the Dicken’s book may be  “answer me one question.  Are these the shadows of the things that Will be, or are they shadows of things that May be, only?” Or something similar.

Central Ohio school districts including the Columbus City School District -  Not familiar with Columbus Ohio?  There are large parts of the City of Columbus which are NOT in the City of Columbus School District.  There are large parts of the north-side of Columbus which are in Worthington, Westerville, Dublin and other suburban school districts.   The same is true in other directions.   It is NOT just downtown Columbus the 43215 ZIP code that has order, transportation options and proximity to jobs and services… think Clintonville,  The University District, City of Columbus neighborhoods near Grandview Heights and Upper Arlington.

In the blog post newer south east Columbus neighborhoods are referred to as declining…

Is there a bleak outlook for Far North Columbus neighborhoods?  The Far North Columbus area is the part of Columbus I live in.  I work from an office in the City of Worthington.  Worthington has a lot of that “urban order”  and walk-ability going on for it.

Many of the neighborhoods in the City of Columbus in the 43085, 43235, 43240, 43065, 43081, 43017,  etc.  are built after 1955.  Most are more car dependent (as opposed to walkable)…they are not in the City of Columbus school district…

Charm?  I am not going there.   Charm is subjective…

All I have to say to the Ghost of Columbus Future is  “answer me one question. Are these the shadows of the things that Will be, or are they shadows of things that May be, only?”
