Bike To Work Week – Columbus

by Maureen McCabe on May 12, 2008

This is Bike To Work Week… today is the kick off.  Right now.  Downtown Columbus.  I am waaaaay up north, yet still in the City of Columbus,  north of 270.  I am still in my PJs.  I thought this was Bike To Work Day… That is Friday.

Can Columbus  be a cycling city? According to we ought to try.

“Why bike to work? If you make just one trip to work by bicycle this week, you are likely to understand and embrace the benefits of bicycling for transportation. Cycling has a positive impact on your health, the environment, and your bottom line.”

What does Columbus have going against it to become a cycling city?  Between reading the info on the site and an article in The Other Paper Cycling City it looks like two things:

  1. Columbus is too spread out
  2. Columbus Drivers don’t respect cyclists sharing the road

What does Columbus have going for it (among other things) … flat terrain.
I need a helmet…. maybe by Friday.

My parents lent me their bike for the summer. I’m afraid to ride it. It’s been so long since I rode a bike I’m afraid of a wipe out.

My fiancee and I just biked into work this morning for the first time. We live up in Delaware. She works near OSU and I work downtown. It was about an hour and fifteen minute commute (~15 miles)from the Worthington Hills trail; where Olentangy river road turns into 315 …to downtown. I carried my work stuff, change of clothes and my lunch bag in a backpack with chest and waist straps.

Yes, I wiped out and gashed my shin and the chain slipped…but it was just me being idiotic. All you need is the proper gear – Helmet, gloves, etc and you’ll be fine. Also, don’t try any stunts for the first few rides at least. Just stay on the trail and away from the streets and you’ll be fine.

Well, it looks like rain on the ride home today…this should be fun. ;-)

Delaware to downtown Columbus (or even OSU) I am impressed.

I hope it does not rain on the ride home for you. I still have not done anything about getting a helmet. Thanks for the comment.
