Haunted Ohio lots of Columbus no Worthington on the list?

The Shadowlands Ohio has lots of haunted places in Central Ohio on the list but nothing in Worthington?

Worthington embraces “ghosts” see links below for some ghost stories from the Worthington Library.

Shadowlands says the Nationwide Arena is haunted, built on the Ohio Pen site. James Thurbers house was haunted of course… because it was near the insane asylum and a poor deranged soul stopped by when Thurber was a young man? Trying to remember if the poor deranged soul was dead or alive? I don’t know that Thurber House is even on the list of Haunted Ohio Places. Or is it? Too literary?

Granville has ghosts of course…Buxton Inn has a famous ghost but that is way out in Licking County.

Haunted Ohio lots of Columbus

Where is Walnut Knolls? Where is St. Pius X school? Where is “the Air and Space Museum” in Columbus?

Camp Chase? Fort Hayes High School Kelton House? Of course… those make sense to me! Wonder if it is Walhalla Road that is haunted or the whole ravine?

Children’s Hospital, Columbus State Community College, Ohio State University’s Mirror Lake are all haunted according to the list.

The Shadowlands Ohio Haunted Places site warns against visiting the sites they have listed. Trespassing. Not because of the ghost but because they are secured, private, or patroled. Much safer to visit the spooky sites online.

Haunted Ohio lots of ghosts in greater Columbus

Central Ohio suburbs.. I see Dublin in the list…the haunted golf course, Cheif Leatherlips, more of a springtime haunting. I see at least one Gahanna ghost on the list. Who knew Gahanna – Jefferson High School gym would be haunted by someone dribbling a basketball in the dark? A pizza hut in Hilliard? Or maybe it is Pizza Hut in Gahanna and an Arby’s in Hilliard? Haunted fast food places are funny to me.

It amazes me that there is no Powell, no Worthington or no Westerville on the Shadowlands list of haunted Ohio places. Not that I know of real ghosts in any of those cities, I just think of older houses and buildings spawning ghost stories. I see old houses in Powell, Westerville and Worthington.

I was showing a HUD home in northeast Ohio to a client and she said as old as it was it had to be haunted. I did not think it was even that old. It may have been from the 1920′s?

Is the photo above some old drafty, “mansiony”, haunted house in Columbus? Nope. That house is in the Village of New Albany… that is a doctored up photo of a home in Ackerly Park in New Albany…built in 2010. Ackerly Park was the site of the 2010 Columbus BIA Parade of Homes. Ackerly Park is a beautiful neighborhood, walkable to shops, restaurants, etc. in the village. Ackerly Park is adjacent to a picturesque cemetery, should make Halloween fun for those who embrace fall spookiness.

The beautiful home pictured built by New England Homes has the “Amityville Horror House” windows up in the attic there… that may have been what inspired me to ghost the photo up a bit here.

Ohio will be represented by Edison … in Washington D.C. A statue of Thomas Edison, will be representing Ohio in a couple of years.

Did you vote? Ohioans could vote for who to represent Ohio in a hall of statues. Each state has two representatives. Ohio native Thomas Edison will join President James Garfield in Washington D.C. A Civil War era Governor of Ohio who has been in the hall of statues for many years will return to Ohio. The statue of the long forgotten Governor who supported slavery… or perhaps it was just that he did not like Abraham Lincoln. The Governor Allen statue is coming home from the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.

Did you vote? For Edison? My vote was for the Wright Brothers. Orville and Wilbur Wright are from Dayton Ohio. Thomas Edison was born in Milan Ohio. I lived in Dayton for a few years. I never lived in Milan Ohio… I remember signs for Edison’s birthplace, when I lived in Akron and would drive across the north part of Ohio

An article titled Wright Brothers shot down Edison statue slated for D.C. was in the Columbus Dispatch on Friday. The Columbus Dispatch article with the sad news and clever headline was written by Alan Johnson. The Columbus Dispatch says:

“After deciding to depose Allen, state officials opted to open the selection of a replacement to a public vote. More than 48,000 people voted on 10 candidates. From that field, Edison emerged with 14,833 votes (30.4 percent), compared with 13,815 votes (28.2 percent) for the Wright Brothers.”

I use Thomas Edison’s invention a lot. Speaking of the light bulb… Thomas Edison invented many things didn’t he? Thomas Edison makes me think of the light bulb. I seldom use the Wright Brothers invention and when I do it really is no fun at all. Check in. Wait. Take off shoes. Wait. Lose shampoo to TSA. Wait. Board. Stow bag in the overhead compartment. Wait. Taxi around the runaways. Wait. Cleared for take off….

There is still something seared in my brain of photos of the Wright Brothers in Huffman Field… on the east side of Dayton. Trying to get their flying machine off the ground.

A site called Touring Ohio says of the Wright Brothers and Huffman Field:

“Huffman Field at the time of the Wright brothers, was a 100-acre farm meadow used for livestock owned by Torrence Huffman. Huffman gave the Wrights access to the field, but had little faith in their flying contraption. “They’re fools,” Torrence told a local farmer. Back in Dayton, the Wrights turned over their bicycle shop to Charlie Taylor to run while they concentrated all their efforts at developing their flying machine. “

Congratulations Edison for the win. Congratulations to Milan Ohio for sending Edison to Washington D.C. to represent us. Come on home Governor Allen, we’ll leave the light on for you…

There are interactive maps on Forbes.com that shows migration around the US. Is there a net movement to Columbus or are people moving out of Central Ohio? Black lines are people moving in. Red lines are people moving out. Pictured in the snippet (non interactive image ) here is Wayne County Michigan, Detroit!

If you click on the links below I have already found Delaware and Franklin County and identified them for you. It will take a few seconds for the Franklin County Ohio and the Delaware County Ohio maps to load

Columbus moving to or fro

Delaware County Ohio -moving to Delaware County or moving from Delaware County?

Franklin County Ohio - moving to Franklin County or moving from Franklin County?

The data is from 2008…

If you click on the interactive maps linked above , many Central Ohio residents moving to Florida… red lines… red lines from Columbus to many bigger cities. Grad students off to their lives?

There are many black lines from southern Michigan and northern Ohio but then again you see lots of black lines from lots of cities, people moving to Central Ohio. If you click on a county at the end of a line (red or black) on the Franklin County Ohio map like lets say “West Chester NY” it will tell you how many people are moved from Franklin County Ohio to West Chester County NY. The map looks pretty red for Franklin County but when you click on counties you can tell there is both a black line and a red line there.

‘Map: Where Americans Are Moving’ an interactive feature on Forbes.

It is interesting to look at other areas for example Wayne County Michigan (Detroit ) or Cuyahoga County Ohio (Cleveland.) Forbes has pre-made maps for Manhattan, Chicago, LA, Washington DC, Detroit and other big cities. Thanks to Brian Block of Washington DC, he shared the Forbes article written by Jon Bruner and the interactive maps on his blog. Brian was gloating about all the black lines to Washington DC. Wouldn’t there have been an even bigger influx of people moving in 2009 to the nations capital with a change in administration?

You can pull up a map for Madison, Union, Licking, Fairfield, etc. counties too.

The maps for Columbus are not Washington DC but they are not Detroit Michigan either….
