If you’re not from Riverlea you might be surprised to know there is opposition to annexation to the City of Worthington.

There’s a website Against Annexation

“Against the Annexation of The Village of Riverlea”

The site is against annexation of the Village of Riverlea to the City of Worthington. The Opposition Forces (sounds a little dramatic doesn’t it?) have a Facebook page too.

After “Against the Annexation of The Village of Riverlea” it says: “DON”T GIVE UP THE VILLAGE”

I know when a friend* (who shall remain nameless) mentioned it…it being ” opposition to annexation to Worthington” and told me WHO opposes Riverlea being annexed to Worthington, it surprised me. As an outsider reading about it, I assumed it was a popular idea and kind of foregone conclusion that annexation to Worthington was in the Central Ohio’s villages best interest.

Monday was Columbus Day… which was a holiday!

I forget Columbus Day is a trash pick-up holiday in Columbus Ohio. I was raring to go for a Friday trash pick-up as I somehow missed trash pick-up a week ago. The pressure was on to get the big green trash can out Thursday night or Friday morning to not to miss it again. Lotsa trash…

On Discover Columbus Ohio (my Columbus Ohio real estate site, current content headlines are in the sidebar here) I saw someone reading an old trash pick-up post… and wondered why. Why would someone be reading about trash pick up? because in part that post talks about Columbus Day being a trash pick-up holiday.

The post from 2008 says:

“Please place your trash out for collection by 6:00 A.M.”

Remember this is old stuff. This was 2008… call 645- NAVY or 645- RUBY, or 645- GOLD or 645-GRAY or 645- I forget the 5th color… 645- PINK? to determine the 2011 rotation.) The old 2008 Columbus trash pick-up post goes on to say:

“The trash day rotates when there is a holiday. For example trash day is Wednesday now in the NAVY area and will be until Columbus Day… after Columbus Day the trash collection day for the NAVY area moves back to Thursday… after Thanksgiving trash day in the NAVY area will be on Friday… and after Christmas trash collection day will move to Monday…. for the NAVY area.

Holidays that affect trash collection include New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day… Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The 2008 Calendar is online. Early in 2009 there will be a new calendar…online.

You can’t help but notice a “Refuse Division” with a mission statement, Columbus Refuse Division Mission Statement I first wrote about Columbus Ohio trash long ago on my first blog back in 2006….

Columbus has color coded trash

It’s trash day in NAVY… I can hear them out there… the roar of the truck… the squeak of the arm…”

I called 645-NAVY being in the NAVY area and heard my trash day is Monday. The pressure is off for now, but Sunday night, Monday morning? Wow. Looking at the holidays, unless something has changed the NAVY area will be Monday trash pick-up until Thanksgiving.

In 2010 Worthington was one of two Franklin County communities that did NOT Trick-or-Treat Thursday, October 28,2010 as prescribed by MORPC. Worthington and Grandview Heights and some Southern Delaware County communities had Trick-or-Treat on Sunday, October 31, 2010 on Halloween. Imagine that?

Beggar’s Night was a tradition in Central Ohio long ago because of a big downtown Halloween Party. A few years back when “Trick-or-Treat” and Halloween were the same day, traditionalists rejoiced. What is Worthington if not traditional?

Neighborhoods in Worthington schools in the City of Columbus did ‘Trick-or- Treat’ on the Thursday before Halloween. Why? because they are in the City of Columbus. A friend who lives in Olentangy Highlands between Olentangy River Road and Linworth Road was not paying a lot of attention. She does not read my blog… Her grandchildren live in the City of Worthington. Totally unaware. She gave kids ‘Special K Treats’ when they rang her door bell and said “Trick -or-Treat.” Reminds me of the Oatmeal Halloween cartoon…

Zillow did an index of the BEST neighborhoods to Trick-or-Treat for some US cities, Atlanta, San Diego, Los Angeles, for Halloween 2010 . Zillow did not do Columbus Ohio, but if Zillow did I would think some Worthington neighborhoods would rank high for Best Neighborhoods for “Trick-or-Treat” in the Columbus area.

What are the BEST Worthington neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treat?

Is Zillow better at predicting ‘Trick-or-Treat” loot than they are with home values? How do they do it?

From the Zillow Blog:

“There is a common belief that wealthy neighborhoods are the Holy Grail for harvesting the most Halloween candy. However, to provide a more holistic approach to trick-or-treating, the Zillow Trick-or-Treat Housing Index was calculated using four equally weighted data variables: Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI), population density, Walk Score and local crime data from Relocation Essentials. Based on those variables, the Index represents neighborhoods that will provide the most candy, with the least walking and safety risks.”

Best Worthington neighborhoods for ‘Trick-or-Treat” based on Zillow + Walk Score + crime data. I am unfamiliar with Relocation Essentials. The online resource for crime data I am familiar with has only City of Columbus data, none of the suburbs, no Worthington data. Or did not have anything other than Columbus data, the last time I looked.

BEST Worthington neighborhoods for Trick-or-Treat?

Perhaps a stab in the dark based on knowing the Worthington neighborhoods? Which Worthington neighborhoods are the BEST for Trick-or-Treat?

Old Worthington because surely some of those old houses have got to be haunted? Haunted has to add to the ambiance but do they give good treats?

Worthington Estates because it seems like lots of kids live there?

Medick Estates? They can afford good candy but those lots are huge, probably does not get as good a “Walk Score” as some Worthington neighborhoods.

Colonial Hills back in the 50s and 60s Colonial Hills would have been the neighborhood to live in for Trick-or-Treat. Maybe even back in the beginning in the 1940s. Families, friendly (the sign says so), small lots get a lotta Halloween loot quick.

A lot but not all of this was previously published on Worthington Old and News – Worthington real estate in 2010. Recycling is good.

An east-side Columbus neighborhood called American Addition is the focus of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode being filmed this week. A Columbus Dispatch article titled “Columbus family’s home getting ‘Extreme Makeover’ ” says:

” The neighborhood …is called American Addition, singled out by Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman in his latest State of the City address as “the most egregiously neglected urban neighborhood I have ever seen.” “

The neighborhood is south of Hudson and east of Cleveland Avenue… I believe. It is just east of Joyce Avenue. You can tell the neighborhood where Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is filming is west of Port Columbus.

The Columbus Dispatch article says of American Addition:

“Annexed by Columbus in 1959, the area of 200 homes has declined to about 50 occupied households”

The number of newer homes in the neighborhood already surprised me. I work primarily in northern Franklin County and southern Delaware County so I was not familiar with the American Addition neighborhood before visiting the neighborhood the day before the existing home was demolished by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and local volunteers. The new home built by P & D Builders for the family and the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will be 4000 square feet. The episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition shot in Columbus will be the 2011 Christmas show.
