Cabela’s Columbus, OH: Polaris

by Maureen McCabe on April 6, 2013

The grand opening of the Cabela’s in Columbus was a month ago?  March 7, 2013 was the start of the Cabela’s Columbus, OH  grand opening event, just less than a month.  During the grand opening event I was up the road at Earth Fare and saw the traffic jams in the parking lot at Cabela’s.

The floor of the Cabela’s Columbus OH store commemorates their 2013 Grand Opening.  Cabela’s proclaims itself “WORLD’S FOREMOST OUTFITTER” at the entrance to the store.  Cabela’s Columbus store is at 1650 Gemini Pl, Columbus, Ohio 43240 (map below.)  This post is very similar to a post on my Delaware County, Ohio real estate site. Recycling!

I have seen a Cabela’s store from outside before but I have never been inside a Cabela’s Store. This store is smaller that the nearest two stores but the Polaris Store is a big enough.

Stuffed animals at Cabela's Columbus OH

Polaris where the deer and the antelope play… in a big store.   I had seen photos online from the Cabela’s Columbus grand opening so I knew of the taxidermy…. but was not really ready for ALL the stuffed animals.  There are a lot of stuffed animals and live fish.   I am NOT a hunter but taxidermy does not bother me…   Or taxidermy is less noticeable in a huge outdoor store with hunting and camping equipment than it is in residential situations.  There was a house in the 2012 BIA Parade of Homes at the Meadows at Lewis Center with decorating featuring a lot of  “taxidermy.” I heard buzzing about the decor before I saw the home.   The decorating theme was more antlers and less stuffed animals but it was still memorable.

If you go to Cabela’s in Columbus, the store is at Polaris in southern Delaware County, just west* of Polaris Fashion Place:

* Just across the road from the backside of Polaris Fashion Place?  Maps of the Polaris area confuse me….

Parking could be a problem at Cabela’s Columbus?

On Foursquare one of the tips about Cabela’s is “park at Costco.”  Another Foursquare tip is that if you park at Costco to visit Cabela’s Columbus your car could be towed.  The signs at nearby businesses seem to show those businesses do NOT want you to park in their lots.  Cabela’s has a parking lot.  Both entrances to the parking lot at Costco and the strip mall right up on Gemini have big, new signs saying something like “no Cabela’s parking.”

We stopped to see Cabela’s  Thursday night 20 minutes before closing and there were plenty of places to park.  I wondered if the unwelcoming signs on surrounding businesses were left over from the Cabela’s Columbus Ohio grand opening.  Or is Cabela’s still  crowded on weekends? I am sure the store and it’s merchandise lends itself to weekend events that could cause busy parking lots.

We spent most of our 20 minutes looking at shoes… well once we took a few photos of the stuffed animals at Cabela’s.
